Introduction
Division is an arithmetic operation in elementary arithmetic which is used as inverse of multiplications.
Division is denoted by / or (รท) sign.
Where,
a is known as dividend
b is known as divisor
c is known as quotient
Note: b is not zero
Here is an example, 4 divided by 8
Given: 4 divided by 8
Mode of operation = Division
$\frac{4}{8}$ = $\frac{1}{2}$
Properties of Division
1. Helps to solve many mathematical problems.
2. Concept of division is almost use in all parts of mathematics like derivatives, limits etc.
3. Division of matrices can be denoted as
$\frac{A}{B}$ = AB-1
4. Division by zero is not defined.
5. Division by 1 will give answer dividend.
Important terms of division
There are 4 terms in division that takes a vital role in solving problems.
Dividend: It is the number which is divided by divisor.
Divisor: It is the number which the dividend will divide by.
Quotient: It is the number of times the divisor that goes into the dividend and it is the result.
Remainder: It is the number which is less than divisor and smaller to divide by divisor for forming whole number.
Division by Zero
Dividing by 0
When we divide any number by 0, this case cannot be possible because zero is not divisible by any number.
Case 1: If zero is dividend, then the total term will be zero
Case 2: If Zero is quotient then it will be infinity
Example:
Divide 10 by 0
Given: 10 divide by 0
Mode of operation: Division
$\frac{10}{0}$ = infinity
Dividing by 1
When we divide by 1, we can easily get the answer because any number divided by 1 equal to that number.
Case1: If 1 divided by divisor then answer will be equal to decimals
Case2: If dividend divided by 1 then answer will be dividend.
Example: 4 divided by1
Given: 4 divided by 1
Mode of operation: Division
$\frac{4}{1}$ = 4
