# Introduction to Division

Introduction

In mathematics, especially in elementary arithmetic, division is the arithmetic operation one among 4 arithmetic operations and it is the inverse of multiplication.

a divided by b equals c, written:

$\frac{a}{b}$ = c

Its dented by (÷) or /

Where:

a is called the dividend,

b the divisor

c the quotient.

Note: b is not zero

Example: 3 divided by 6

Given: 3 divided by 6

Mode of operations: Division

$\frac{3}{6}$ = $\frac{1}{2}$

## Properties of Division

1. Helps to solve many mathematical problems.

2. Concept of division is almost use in all parts of mathematics like derivatives, limits etc.

3. Division of matrices can be denoted as A/B=AB-1

4. Division by zero is not defined.

5. Division by 1 will give answer dividend.

## Types of Division

1. Division by single digit

2. Division by double digit

3. Division by three digit

Division by single digit

Division by single digit, it contain Numerator i.e. dividend and divisor in single digits. Division of single digits is easy.

Steps:

First, write the dividend and divisor as numerator and denominator form by representing with symbol (/)

Then check out numerator and denominator i.e. how many times they are divisible by each other and cancel the terms

Represent the answer with equal to sign

Example: 3 divided by 6

Given: 3 divided by 6

Mode of operations: Division

\frac{3}{6}$=$\frac{1}{2}\$

## Division by Two Digits

The Numerator and denominator contains 2 terms. The division is same like single digit.

Steps:

First write the dividend and divisor as numerator and denominator form by representing with symbol (/)

Then check out numerator and denominator i.e. how many times they are divisible by each other, and cancel the terms

Represent the answer with equal to sign.

Example: Divide 21 and 28

Given: 21 and 28

Mode of operation : Division

## Division by 3 Digits

The Numerator and denominator contains 3 terms. The division is same like single and double digit.

Steps:

First write the dividend and divisor as numerator and denominator form by representing with symbol (/)

Then check out numerator and denominator i.e. how many times they are divisible by each other, and cancel the terms

Represent the answer with equal to sign

Example: Divide 363 and 242

Given: 363 and 242

Mode of operation: Division
