A stem and leaf is a representation of a data where the items are shown in groups. As the name suggests, each group is a stem and the sub items of that group are the leaves of the stem.
Basically it is a T diagram with the stem to the left of the vertical line and the leaves to its right.

Example of a Stem and Leaf Plot

Steps to Make a Stem and Leaf Plot
First arrange all the items of the data in order.
Decide the stems and leaves depending on the size of the numbers in the data.
Enter the stems one below the other in stems column.
Enter the corresponding leaves in the same line but in leaves column
Example Problem of Stem and Leaf Plot
Example 1
What is the value of the number whose stem and leaf are shaded?
The digit shaded in leaf is 9 and the digit shaded in stem is 2. That means it is 9 ones and 2 tens which is 29.
Example 2
Make a stem and leaf plot for the following data
(107, 124, 83, 109, 104, 84, 123, 127, 103, 106, 97, 117)
Arranging the items in order, the data set is,
(83, 84, 97, 103, 104, 106, 107, 109, 117, 123, 124, 127)
Let us make the tens as stems and the ones as leaves and enter as follows.
