Sums and Differences of Four-digit Numbers

Simplification (Combined Addition and Subtraction)

Now we will consider some examples having addition and subtraction operations both

Example 1. Simplify 4328 + 1286 – 3290

Solution: First add the numbers having + sign

Th H T O

1 1

4 3 2 8

+ 1 2 8 6

5 6 1 4

Now subtract number having – sign form the sum of the numbers having + sign

Therefore,

4328 + 1286 – 3290 = 2324

A number without any sign it has + sign

Example 2. Simplify 3756 – 4129 + 2123.

Solution: First add the numbers having + sign

Th H T O

3 7 5 6

+ 2 1 2 3

5 8 7 9

Now subtract the number having – sign from the sum of the numbers having + sign

Th H T O

5 8 7 9

- 4 1 2 9

1 7 5 0

Therefore, 3756 – 4129 + 2123 = 1750

Remember,

First we add and then subtract.

Simplify

  1. 2198 + 4356 – 3254
  2. 2632 + 1948 – 1452
  3. 5327 + 1235 – 2354
  4. 8960 + 3125 – 1985
  5. 1789 + 1346 – 1896
  6. 1823 – 2528 + 2357
  7. 5329 – 2195 + 3518
  8. 4520 – 4185 + 1159
  9. 1528 + 1346 – 1896
  10. 5353 – 7958 + 3349
