What test do I need to take for admission in Thomas Jefferson High School (TJHSST)?
All applicants to the freshman class at TJ high school must take the TJ admissions test. Applicants to the sophomore or junior classes at TJHSST must take either the PSAT or the SAT as their required testing. They do not take the TJ Admissions Test.
What does the TJ admissions test involve?
The admissions examination consists of a two and one-half hour standardized test. Students take a short break and then are given one hour to write two essays to provide a writing sample. This writing sample is not part of the test score, but will be used as part of the selection process if the applicant is included in the semifinalist pool.
The test has two sections: Verbal and Mathematics.
Verbal Section (70 questions):
Word knowledge and verbal reasoning are measured by 20 questions on word meanings, 10 on logical reasoning, and 15 on analogies. Reading comprehension is measured by
five reading selections, each of which is followed by five questions that tap your ability to understand, analyze, and interpret what you have read. You should not spend more
than 75 minutes on this section.
Mathematics section (50 questions)
To measure mathematical reasoning, about three-fourths of this section consists of word problems and computation questions. The rest of the section asks you to determine the
relationship between two quantities. The formulas needed are given in the test booklet. Seventy-five minutes will be allotted for this section.
What types of essays are students asked to write?
Students write two essays at the time of testing in December. One essay focuses on real-world problem solving, often with an ethical component. The other essay requires self-assessment or self-reflection by the applicant.
What are the selection criteria besides the TJHSST admission test?
The school serves students selected on the basis of aptitude and interest in the biological, physical, mathematical, and computer sciences and who intend to pursue college preparation in the sciences, engineering, or related fields. There are approximately 420 students in each grades. Only about 17% of the total applicants are offered admission each year.
TJHSST seeks highly motivated students who demonstrate:
- Aptitude for successful study of science, mathematics, computer science, and related technological fields;
- Record of prior academic achievement;
- Interest and motivation in the study of science and mathematics, computer science, and related technologies; and
- Background, skills, or experiences that would contribute to a diverse student body which will enhance the unique learning experience at TJHSST and develop future leaders of the 21st century.
What is the admission process for Thomas Jefferson high school admission?
There are two phases to the admissions process. Phase I is relevant to all applicants. Phase II is for students who are determined to be semifinalists at the conclusion of Phase I.
Phase I:
All applicants must take the Thomas Jefferson Admissions Test, which is administered in December. The test is a standardized reasoning test that measures how well a student can use knowledge gained over his/her previous seven years of schooling as well as 2 essay questions.
In late January/early February following the test, applicants are informed by letter whether they will be considered as semifinalists who will continue on to the second stage of the TJHSST admissions process.
Phase II:
All semifinalists must obtain three teacher recommendations and fill out a Student Information Sheet to complete their application packets to TJHSST. The recommendations must come from a math teacher, a science teacher, and a third teacher of the applicant's choice. The entire packet - student information sheet, teacher recommendations, two essay scores (from test in Dec), report card marks in core subjects, TJ admission test scores, and student’s original application form – is evaluated holistically by two selection committees for final TJ admission decisions.
