Importance of Practice in Math and English

back

“Practice makes a man perfect” – there isn’t another statement that can more aptly describe the importance of regular practice in subjects such as English and Math. From the very beginning, these two subjects form the basics of any child’s academic life. In fact, Math and English are the introductory subjects in any child’s academic life and they take their first step in academics with their A,B,Cs or 1,2,3s and then move on to bigger things like reading multiple lettered words and adding the numbers.

Comprehension of both reading and writing of English is important not only for learning the English language, but also for learning other subjects such as science and history. Students with poor comprehension of English struggle a great deal to understand complex science subjects. The usual tendency of such students is to take tutoring for science whereas  the real problem lies in  their inability to comprehend English properly.

Similarly, many students face problems with percents and algebra because they never got grounded on the basic concepts of division, multiplication and fractions.

Regular Practice of Math and English Has Many Advantages

There are many advantages of regular practice:

  1. Regular practice ensures that the student does enough problems of each kind so that the concept is ingrained in his mind. This ensures that in an exam, he would be able to solve such problems with ease.
  2. When the student knows that he has to practice Math every day, he will also look forward to variety in the problems or advancement in the topics. Such students are also usually good at story problems since one they figure out the computational aspect of the problem, they can start working on the problem solving skills.
  3. Through daily practice, students become comfortable with a test-like format and learn good time management skills and learn to set goals.
  4. Regular practice makes students efficient in solving problems resulting in better test scores for them.
  5. Regular practice improves the conceptual understanding and allows the students to advance at their own pace. This also allows them to actually achieve more than what is covered in their school classes.

Integrate 20 minutes of Regular Practice in Daily Schedule

In today’s world of diverse distractions such as the many TV channels, interesting websites and  a variety of interactive video games, finding time for studies requires a lot of  persuasion from the parents and a great deal of motivation from the  students. Creating a regimen of regular practice at home for just 20 minutes every day can do wonders for the student without asking for too much of his attention.

Get Guidance Early On To Reduce Stress Later

As these students advance in their academic life and are preparing for tests such as ACT or SAT or GMAT, the difference between someone who has been regularly practicing versus someone who has just started preparing for the exam becomes very obvious. Students, who regularly practice Math and English even if for just 20 minutes a day, are already prepared for solving problems quickly or in a time-controlled environment, thereby making them better prepared for such tests.

Though 20 minutes a day is not much, the difference it can make in the long run is huge. Regular Math and English practice habits adopted early on can reduce the stress and anxiety in the lives of these students later on in their lives.
