Tips to Beat the Test Stress back

Feeling stressed out closer to exam date is natural for many. You have been working hard to prepare for the exam, you know your strengths, you have received extra tutoring to strengthen your weaker areas, and you feel prepared for the exam. But still, your heart keeps pounding and you feel anxious about what would be asked in the exam and the outcome.

The truth remains that if you have put in your best efforts to prepare for the exam, then you don’t have much to worry about. You are not reacting so much to the exam, but to your perception about the same and its outcome. Yes, the result is important, but no exam can be a “be all and end all” game for anyone. Life moves on and so would you.

To feel more prepared and to beat the stress, the following are certain simple actions you can take:

  • Be Prepared

Begin preparing for the exam with positive thoughts. Look at how much time you have for preparing for the exam, make a plan to achieve your schedule based on the available time and focus on execution of the schedule. Get rid of all negative thoughts about your performance abilities and preparedness and take control of your thoughts. Negative thoughts about your abilities can increase the stress and reduce your productivity. Think of a positive outcome, a successful test scenario and define a realistic success in your mind. Once you have done that, you can put your mind into achieving this success.

Preparing properly for your exam will make it less intimidating. Familiarizing yourself with the format and types of questions and revising your weak areas will help you feel more confident. You may still feel tensed, but you will get used to this feeling and not be bothered about it during the exam if you have prepared well.

  • Have a Plan for the Final Days

  • Focus on the problem solving and test handling strategy in the last few days instead of learning new material. Revise the old material that you have learned so far.
  • Relax the night before the exam and pack your stuff to take to the exam center
  • Getup early and have a healthy breakfast
  • Reach a bit early in the center to avoid any traffic delays
  • Execute

During the exam, remember that you have already prepared for the same and that you know the questions and nothing can surprise you. Keep the bigger goal in your mind – this exam is just one step in reaching that goal. Most colleges look at you as a holistic person rather than just focusing on scores. And you can always repeat the exam, if need be. So, focus on the questions during the exam instead of getting worried about the final score or what you don’t know. Do your best in the areas where you know.

  • In the end…

Relax after the exam. It will remind you that there is a life beyond exams and the scores. You have done your best; now let the results show it.
