Making Learning Fun

“Tell me, and I’ll forget; show me, and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand.”
                                                     ~Chinese Proverb

Learning is truly successful when the student is not only able to grasp the basics of the concept that is being introduced, but is also able to relate to other relevant topics in the real world. Education without application is pointless, and in the end it only boils down to memorizing facts and figures. Learning can and should be made fun and is a guaranteed way to ensure that kids not only enjoy themselves while learning but also remember their experiences and learning forever.
Making Learning Fun
While textbooks are important to any curriculum, as they form the basis of the education that is to be achieved in a particular grade, they are not the beginning and the end of education. Students find a learning experience that involves them to be more useful and effective.
In Home Tutoring – Math Tutor, English Tutor, Math Online Tutor, Online Math Help, Reading Skills, Problem Solving Skills, Writing Help, Homework Help   To make learning fun it is important for parents and teachers to keep a few key points in mind:

  • Student Involvement: Learning is not always about being taught, as a parent you need to take on activities from which you can learn along with your children. Such an activity will give kids a chance to explore aspects that may not have been covered in a lesson.

For instance a historical field trip to a local monument can also lead to questions on architecture, ecology and science. Involving your children in activities makes them sit up and actively participate in the learning process and hence is fun.

  • Integrated Learning: Make learning fun it not just by focusing on the concept that is being discussed but also on how it relates to other subjects.
How about making photosynthesis interesting by taking your children out into the garden? This opportunity can be used not only teach about how chlorophyll is used to make food for the plant but also about parts of the plant, how the geography of the land affects it and types of plant in the garden. You could also discuss fruits or flowers that are seen in the garden or the poets and painters who have been inspired by the changing seasons.   In Home Tutoring – Math Tutor, English Tutor, Math Online Tutor, Online Math Help, Reading Skills, Problem Solving Skills, Writing Help, Homework Help
  • For students who struggle with a new concept theoretically, try a more practical approach. If your child is having trouble understanding fractions, allow him to help you divide the pie you have made for dessert and subtly talk about how fractions help decide how many pieces he needs to cut to cater to the entire family.

Next use the left over to deduce what faction of the pie was eaten on the dinner table and the amount left for the next day. Use everyday activities or chores to supplement learning and make it fun and relevant to daily life.

  • You can also use games of all kinds such as board games and video games to enhance the learning experience. The crux, of course, is in selecting the relevant game to relate to the topic that is being discussed.

A learning experience that involves students and makes them think will always be successful. It is also important for you to decide the key point that you want to teach and then use relevant activities to teach that concept. Learning can definitely be fun, if students are involved and taught in the right way.
