Studying and learning math as a subject is very different from say, studying history or science. To be successful in math, you have to be studying this subject very actively.

Math Online Tutors from Online Tutoring – Math Online Tutor, English Online Tutor, Personal Tutor, Personalized Tutoring have taught hundreds of students over the years and have created some generic math study tips for you to focus on. These will enable you to learn the subject more efficiently and effectively.

Study Math Actively

Math can’t be treated as a passive learning subject. The more you are involved in the learning process, the more and the faster you will learn. Take complete ownership for learning Math – use teacher as a guiding force.

  • Attend class every day. Math course is usually build in a way such that each class is built on the previous class and each topic uses the learning from the previous topic. So, always attend every math class. Catching up becomes harder with each class you miss.
  • Actively participate in the class. Try to go through the material beforehand even if you don’t understand everything. This will prepare you for the class and you will know exactly what the teacher is going to teach. Use the class discussion to clarify your doubts, ask questions and try to answer questions asked by other students or teachers.
  • Use office hours to clarify doubts. Always review at home the topic covered in the class while it is still fresh in your mind. It will enable you to absorb the topic better.
Practice is THE Key in Math

Math is a subject that can be learned only through practice. There’s no shortcut to this.

  • Do your homework regularly. Never miss any homework. Devote as much time as needed, but ensure that you complete your homework. Math homework is the best way to get practice on the topic currently being covered in the classroom.
  • Do extra practice problems if you have time. You can find extra problems in your text book, on the web, or through daily practice programs offered by companies such as Online Tutoring – Math Online Tutor, English Online Tutor, Personal Tutor, Personalized Tutoring (you can use these session to review the material and to get extra practice). Since every next topic builds on the previous concept, the more you practice on newer topics, the more you will get practice on the older topics.
Build Good Study Habits

Taking our time for Math on a regular basis can help you in the long run for preparing for tests.

  • Assign some specific time for studying Math – may be two hours on the day before ever Math class. Use this time to review previous material, and scan the new material to be covered in the next class. Spend 1-2 hours every weekend for extra problem solving practice sessions.
  • Form a study group. The more variety of problems you discuss and solve, the better prepared you will be for the tests. Since there are multiple ways of solving math problems, discussing these with your friends will enable you to see their way to thinking. Keep your mind open during the discussions in these study groups, and you can learn different ways to approach the same problem – some may be better and more efficient ways of solving problems than they way you do.
